Tackling domestic violence
Domestic violence is a significant problem in our churches and communities. One in three women in Australia have experienced physical and/or sexual violence at the hands of someone they know; on average, one woman is killed every week by a current or former intimate partner; and domestic violence is the chief cause of homelessness among women and children. Domestic violence is also found in our churches.
In April this year, the Australian Baptist National Council determined to call upon all Baptist churches in Australia to make 2018 a year in which we come together to domestic violence church communities and wider communities. A Just Cause, the NSW & ACT Baptist Public Engagement Group and Baptistcare NSW are working together to produce resources that will help every church:
- Recognise and respond to domestic violence within families that belong to the church;
- Build a relationship with domestic violence service providers in their local community and offer whatever assistance is appropriate;
- Identify the gaps in resource provision in their local areas and take time to speak with their local government, State Government MPs and Federal MPs about making that change possible.
We plan a series of prelaunch events in the final third of this year. To stay in touch eneter your details below.
